The second edition of the Lighting for Sports Series places a focus on Athletics. With a combination of different sporting events such as the 100m sprint, javelin, shotput and high jump, athletics grounds must have a high-quality lighting system to ensure maximised performance for the different needs of athletes.

When planning any athletics venue, it is important to know which guidance you are expected to work to, typically it would be British Standards BS EN 12193 or England Athletics. It is important to follow these as it will allow for greater visual clarity and comfort throughout events to ensure optimised viewing for participants and spectators.

Standards

BS EN 12193

British Standards requirements divide sites into three levels of play focusing on track and field events. It references how the equipment used for sports can vary in size and therefore the illumination must enable great levels of clarity for all on site.

Through abiding by these standards, your lighting performance with an evenly distributed, minimal obtrusion system. The ‘Levels of Play’ indicate the competitive status of the site which can dictate the horizontal illuminance required. The levels are shown below -

England Athletics

Alike the BS EN 12193, England Athletics have three levels of play indicating the difference between club types – International/Premier (Class 1), Club (Class 2) and Community (Class 3). With slightly lower lux levels required, the standards also mention the controlling of glare and obtrusive lighting and how this must be controlled.
