Emergency Lighting – What you need to know

Public and personnel safety is the number one priority, and in the event of an emergency the last thing you want is to worry about is lighting. So here’s our guide to emergency lighting, giving you peace of mind.

First things first… What is Emergency Lighting?

Simply put, this is the lighting that springs into action when the main power supply of a site is cut for any reason!

Did you know there are two types of emergency lighting?

Maintained lighting that provides consistent light in the event of the failure of the normal power supply.

Non Maintained lighting comes on immediately when the power supply is cut and enables people to continue activities.

What about the Power Supply?

Power supplies must be considered to make sure your lighting choice is suitable for your site. There are two different types of power supply available for emergency lighting:

Self contained – The clue is in the name! This type of emergency lighting has an on-board battery system to draw from when activated. Self contained emergency lighting is the most common type of power supply as it allows retrofitting without extensive rewiring to the main system.

Central Battery System – This system is directly wired into the main power supply of the site and draws all power from this central source to charge the batteries in the system. In the event of a power failure, the lights are powered up in an emergency situation to help evacuate the area. This option only works for new builds as specific wiring will need to be included in the central electrical system.

What Type of Power Supply do Kingfisher Offer?

We have designed all of our emergency enabled luminaires to include an integral or on-board battery. This provides a no fuss system that gives you peace of mind, without the hassle of a complicated or lengthy installation procedures. The batteries are designed to exceed UK standards and of 3hr maintained output.

Where should emergency lighting be installed on an exterior scheme?

Placement of emergency lighting is key to preventing further panic or confusion in an emergency situation. Emergency enabled lighting is needed in areas such as escape routes, large open areas, fire assembly points, pathways, building entrances and fire exits, as well as many more possible locations depending on the site layout and function.

Emergency lighting should lead to one final exit point. All fire exits should have emergency lighting over their doors to help emergency services determine where the points are if needed. Also, some designs require illumination to the muster point to show where people need to go on the path to safety.

Our experienced Lighting Design Team are fully versed in emergency luminaires and all the relevant regulations and guidance surrounding safety and will ensure your site is entirely kitted out, again, giving you peace of mind that your site is as safe as houses!
