International Dark Sky Week 2022
Encouraging conversations about the impact of light on all living species, International Dark Sky Week dates back to 2003 and has since become a key component to help educate about light pollution.
The introduction of artificial light dates all the way back to 500 BC, where primitive lanterns were built from bamboo and natural gas. As technology has developed over time, artificial lighting has since revolutionised our lives. Yet, as with many innovations such as this, there are negative effects, and with the arrival of artificial lighting came light pollution.
Light pollution occurs when there is an inappropriate use of artificial illumination resulting in glare, sky glow, light trespass, and clutter which can disturb inhabitants of residencies, workspaces, animal and wildlife reserves.
Statistics show that 99% of the public across the United States and Europe cannot see the natural light sky. Fortunately, unlike other pollutants which take generations to reverse, light pollution can be reduced with immediate effect when the correct solutions are in place.
The (IDA) International Dark Skies Association have made it their mission to educate and inform the public on the consequences of light pollution as well as supply information and advice on how we can reduce this. They even give an ‘IDA Seal of Approval’ to many luminaires and recommend reputable manufacturers to responsibly source external lighting fixtures.
We have our very own IDA-approved luminaire range consisting of flood lights, wall packs and street lighting. Created using state of the art components, the Kingfisher range is focused on promoting a comfortable environment for all without suffering from the detrimental effects of light pollution.
