Remembrance Day 2020
On this day at 11am in 1918 World War One came to an end after a gruelling battle that took so many lives and affected the whole world. Today, we remember the fallen soldiers who fought for our freedom in the line of duty.
Many services and events were held throughout the UK on Remembrance Sunday, as well as a ceremony held at the London Cenotaph which will be broadcasted to those at home. This year's events will still take place in a socially distanced environments throughout not only the UK but many other countries within the Commonwealth.
The International Bomber Command Centre, based in Lincoln, is a celebration and memorial for those who lost their lives whilst working for bomber command. It has a 31 metre memorial spire, created to emulate the shape and size of the wing of a bomber and offset walls featuring the names of the fallen. It also has two peace gardens and the Chadwick Centre including educational exhibitions and galleries.
We were invited to create an elegant lighting scheme using a range of our Italian built luminaires, to perfectly compliment the award-winning structure.
Moto luminaire was placed inside the structure itself providing internal light with an impressive and powerful output which helped highlight the structure as a part of the Lincoln skyline. We thought this was appropriate due to the structure being the largest memorial in the UK.
Inground fittings were placed outside the memorial to illuminate the exterior of the core-10 replica wing.
500mm Klou IK bollards provide light to pathways across the site ensuring people can walk around safely no matter the time of day. They are mainly placed the paths leading towards the memorial as well as the Chadwick Centre.
Ray downlights were used around the Chadwick Centre to add to the overall aesthetic of the site. It allows staff and visitors to have safely light paths on their way to different areas of the site. The car park was lit with our Italo fittings providing a secure environment for all.
The overall outcome is outstanding as we produced a subtle yet effective lighting scheme using mainly architectural luminaires. The scheme perfectly illuminated the site creating a peaceful and respectful environment to remember those who fought for our country.
