Kingfisher’s Single Spectrum Range
As research and case studies within the ILP’s Guidance Note 8 Bats and Artificial Lighting (GNO8/23) highlight, single spectrum light sources have been proven to mitigate the impact of lighting on bats, plants and animals. Explore our range of single spectrum options for wildlife/conservation areas that require more than just warm light.
What is Single Spectrum Lighting?
Single spectrum is the use of monochromatic light outputs within lighting instead of the typical white illumination. From humans and animals, to plant species, artificial lighting affects us all in different ways. It can affect melatonin levels, eating patterns, circadian rhythms and increases the chance of being hunted by predators. It is so important to illuminate these areas accurately to ensure all species can thrive.
Single Spectrum Range
In line with the guidance, single spectrum lighting uses peak wavelengths above 560nm and mixes in warm white LEDs to ensure a correlated colour temperature of 1000K, and a colour rendering index of at least 60 to ensure good colour rendition for human uses.
RED and AMBER – Mammals and Bats
It is known that bats and other mammals are extremely sensitive to ultraviolet light and sometimes blue light within the spectrum. This can be harmful especially for bats as they don’t have to ability to let their eyes adjust in comparison to other species like humans and cats.
GREEN – Birds, Flora and Fauna
Best placed in areas full of plants and greenery; green light can penetrate a canopy better than other wavelengths, allowing less leaf loss at the base, while still providing illumination. It also works well for birds as they can see colours such as red, orange and yellow, which can signal danger to these animals.
