Sports and High Mast and The Environment

Sports grounds, ports, airports and freight terminals, for example, require high lighting levels that could potentially cause an impact on the environment. Obtrusive light, light pollution and the disruption of human and wildlife are all factors that need serious consideration. But what can we do to minimise this impact?

DJI_0125

Many less experienced manufacturers and lighting suppliers either find it difficult to meet the accurate levels and strict guidance for high mast sites, whilst still catering for environmental considerations, or simply neglect to investigate bespoke solutions all together. However, it can be done, and we can show you how…

Here’s our top tips for environmentally considerate high mast lighting…

Use Experienced Lighting Designers

Experience is key! Using a team of dedicated sports and high mast designers with proven experience in producing high quality designs will make a huge different to the end result and future of your project.

A qualified team, such as the Kingfisher Design Team will produce schemes that meet, and even exceed the growing needs surrounding human-centricity, ecology, and the environment, whilst delivering high quality illumination and superior quality of light that will stand the test of time.

Select Quality Luminaires

Low quality fittings are often chosen as a cost saving exercise, but we all know the phrase ‘false economy’! Low cost usually means, low quality, short lifetime and inefficiencies when it comes to energy usage, output and lifetime. These fittings very rarely meet baseline standards and will almost certainly need to be replaced within a few years.

By choosing a reputable brand with quality luminaires, you will guarantee a much higher standard of work that is futureproof. ROI calculations will project savings across the board, along with environmental reports to outline the lessened impact on the environment surrounding the site.

Opt for Low Glare Options

Any site, and its surrounding areas with a high volume of human activity, must first consider visual comfort. High levels of glare or poor quality of light can often cause visual discomfort for site users, as well road users and local residents. These installations will not meet the guidance set out by the leading industry bodies and almost certainly result in additional costs for the installation.

Our bespoke Alanod™ MIRO-Silver reflector- technology has been specifically developed to deliver maximum light to the task area whilst establishing a sharp cut-off of light alleviating the prospect of glare.

Amnis Match

Consider Low Colour Temperatures

Lower colour temperatures produce far less blue light, that is proven to have a lesser negative impact on wildlife habitats, circadian rhythm disruption, obtrusive light, sky glow as well as creating a nicer environment for humans.

However, many high mast sites require the higher colour temperature of 4000K. Our specially designed fittings with a built in spill shield minimise light spill and protect the surrounding areas. The dedicated lighting designer will also be able to create the best possible scheme design that creates minimal impact.

Select DarkSky Approved Fixtures

DarkSky International is actively fighting to reduce, and even reverse the effects of light pollution. With a strict assessment criterion, each fitting is put through its paces to ensure minimal impact.

The AMNIS Series have DarkSky Approved status and are the perfect choice for environmentally conscious projects.
