Sleep and Lighting

There have been many studies over the years in relation to Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) and the human body’s natural response. Scientists such as Dumont and Beaulieu have researched how light can disrupt our melatonin levels creating an impact on our circadian rhythms.

The general contributor to reduced melatonin is blue light, which in terms of exterior lighting shining through our windows can be in the form of cool colour temperatures and this can be resolved with the correct lighting equipment and a skilled lighting designer. We have been working tirelessly to promote human-centric schemes and therefore we have included some of our top tips below.

Colour Temperature

Opt for 3000K and 2700K to reduce the blue light output and boost human-centricity. Visually lower colour temperatures are warmer and therefore less harsh on the eye which is perfect for optimising lighting for humans. We host a variety of luminaires available in warmer colour temperatures to boost visual comfort.

We’ve also introduced an innovative dim to warm system which allows easy on site switching between 4000K and 2700K. Controlled via Kingfisher Controls, this system provides versatility for your site in addition to human-centricity.

Flat-to-Ground

By utilising flat-to-ground luminaires, you are reducing the direct upward light which often causes nuisance for residential and wildlife habitats. It is known that quality LEDs perform best when positioned flat-to-ground benefiting site users with greater coverage, controlled distribution as well as reduced obtrusive light.

Quality Lighting Design

When approaching any human-centric scheme, it is vital to reduce obtrusive light and ensure comfortable surroundings. We would recommend you do this through investing in a skilled Lighting Designer with knowledge on all the latest guidance and legislations. All the Kingfisher Lighting Design Team are fully versed in the latest knowledge regarding nuisance light.

A designer can offer you various mounting heights, optic recommendations, spill shields and more to ensure all your lighting is fully controlled and optimised for the best uniformity and lux levels. This is one of the best ways to optimise your lighting scheme near residential areas, promoting better sleep patterns.
