The Flicker Of Fear – [d]arc awards 2024

A movie experience like never before…

For months, the Kingfisher Lighting team worked alongside the talented designers at ARUP to create an immersive lighting installation for the [d]arc Awards 2024. Inspired by the event’s theme, the concept transported visitors back to the atmosphere of classic 1980s horror cinema.

Rather than opting for the stereotypical neon spectacle often associated with 80s design, the installation focused on atmosphere, storytelling and surprise. The result was a carefully crafted lighting experience that blended nostalgia with dramatic visual effects.

Along with the talented ARUP designers, we created an authentic 1980s living room featuring vinyl wood-panelled walls, a classic box television, VHS tapes, a two-way mirror and other period details. The setting was designed to replicate the home cinema experience of the era while introducing subtle elements to build suspense.

The Kingfisher team synchronised a specially devised video sequence with a DMX lighting show, triggered at the push of a button by the viewer. The audio-visual experience took visitors on a journey through 1980s horror cinema, complete with unexpected twists and atmospheric lighting effects.

To bring the installation to life, we used Arcluce RGBW KRION-IN luminaires alongside the TITO 90 to create dramatic colour transitions and immersive lighting scenes throughout the space.
