|
The Harwell Campus lighting project supports a thriving community of scientists, engineers and innovators, bringing together world-leading organisations within a modern research environment. With over 6,000 people already based on site and ambitious expansion plans to support more than 15,000, the contemporary Quad Two development required a lighting scheme that balanced architectural integration, visual comfort and long-term performance. Harwell Campus Lighting ProjectThe brief focused on creating a calm, well-lit external environment that enhances safety and supports movement across the campus, while maintaining the refined architectural language of the development. The SolutionFollowing site assessment and consultation, Kingfisher Lighting delivered a coordinated lighting scheme combining architectural detail with functional amenity illumination. COMPASS luminaires were installed across key areas using both standard and urban post-top mounting options. Their clean aesthetic and strong visual comfort performance made them ideal for supporting human-centric design principles. At entrances and circulation zones, RAY downlights in a stainless-steel finish were specified with 29° flood optics, delivering controlled, glare-free illumination. CINEP provided subtle accent lighting to architectural features and under-seat areas, enhancing the campus atmosphere after dark. In communal spaces, DUEVENTI architectural floodlights offered high levels of visual comfort while maintaining a seamless integration with the contemporary surroundings. To further enhance safety, SEMITA Urban wallpacks were installed at key entrances, incorporating 3-hour emergency functionality and photocell control to improve energy efficiency. Key Outcomes

Harwell Campus Lighting Project
The brief focused on creating a calm, well-lit external environment that enhances safety and supports movement across the campus, while maintaining the refined architectural language of the development.
The Solution
Following site assessment and consultation, Kingfisher Lighting delivered a coordinated lighting scheme combining architectural detail with functional amenity illumination.
COMPASS luminaires were installed across key areas using both standard and urban post-top mounting options, supporting human-centric design with strong visual comfort performance.
RAY downlights in a stainless-steel finish were specified with 29° flood optics to provide controlled, glare-free illumination at entrances and circulation points.
CINEP provided subtle accent lighting to architectural features and under-seat areas, enhancing the campus atmosphere after dark.
DUEVENTI architectural floodlights delivered comfortable illumination in communal spaces while integrating seamlessly into the contemporary environment.
SEMITA Urban wallpacks were installed at key entrances with 3-hour emergency functionality and photocell control to improve safety and energy efficiency.
Key Outcomes
- Enhanced user safety and wayfinding
- High levels of visual comfort across the campus
- Subtle architectural enhancement after dark
- Integrated emergency lighting provision
- Energy-efficient control through photocell technology
