The Joseph Chamberlain College development in Highgate, Birmingham formed part of a major education investment designed to provide modern teaching facilities within an architecturally distinctive campus setting. The external areas required a coordinated lighting scheme that balanced safety, visual comfort and architectural integration, supporting clear navigation across the concourse, landscaped spaces, car parking areas and sports facilities. Joseph Chamberlain College Lighting ProjectKingfisher Lighting was invited to design and supply the external lighting scheme for the new Joseph Chamberlain College campus, helping create a welcoming and practical environment for students, staff and visitors after dark. The SolutionWorking alongside the wider project team, Kingfisher Lighting developed a considered scheme for the principal amenity areas including the main concourse, landscaped gardens, car park and the multi use games area. Architecturally inspired Delta Indirect luminaires were specified within the main concourse to complement the open form of the campus and create a softer lighting effect throughout the external circulation spaces. The same family of luminaires was used within the main car park to provide consistent amenity lighting and support safe vehicle and pedestrian movement across the site. Architectural features, landscaped areas and the building façade were enhanced using INGROUND 260 buried uplighters, while DECO 1 bollards provided additional orientation lighting to support wayfinding through outdoor spaces. Perimeter areas around the main buildings incorporated ALFRESCO bulkheads to deliver practical lighting where functional visibility was required. The multi use games area presented a more complex challenge due to its lower level position and surrounding wall enclosure. To overcome this, Kingfisher Lighting developed a tailored arrangement using wall mounted floodlights and a unique column solution to achieve the required sports lighting levels. All of the exterior lighting and bollards were finished in grey to maintain a cohesive appearance across the campus and complement the cladding and wider architectural palette of the development.
