Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng in Welshpool is a modern education project that brings together a Grade II listed building with a newly constructed Passivhaus-standard extension, creating a contemporary learning environment rooted in both heritage and sustainability. The external lighting scheme needed to support safe movement around the site while respecting the listed architecture, promoting visual comfort and considering the surrounding environment and local wildlife. Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng Lighting ProjectKingfisher Lighting was invited to design a high-performance external lighting scheme with emergency capability, delivering safe and intuitive illumination across the school grounds while working sensitively around the listed building fabric. The SolutionThe final scheme was designed to balance performance, sustainability and architectural sensitivity, with low colour temperatures selected to improve visual comfort and reduce impact on local wildlife habitats. Along pathways and car parking areas, ITALO 1 luminaires in 2700K were specified to provide uniform illumination and support safe passage for students, staff and parents moving around the site. QUADRIO 3.5m light poles in 2700K were positioned around fencing close to key entrance and exit points, providing elegant illumination and incorporating 3-hour emergency functionality. Around the new Passivhaus structure, QUARTO 2.0 luminaires were mounted at 3m to illuminate play areas, entrances and building perimeters with a comfortable, controlled output. To preserve the integrity of the Grade II listed façade, emergency modules were integrated within selected GOTHIC bollards, with wall-mounted fittings used only on the newer parts of the development where appropriate. LUNIO amenity fixtures were installed around the main entrance to provide welcoming, high-quality illumination for after-school pick-ups and staff departures, resulting in a cohesive lighting scheme that supports safety, comfort and site character. ITALO 1 luminaires were used along pathways and car parking areas, while QUADRIO light poles provided illumination at key entrance and exit points with emergency functionality.
QUARTO 2.0 luminaires were installed around the new Passivhaus structure, with GOTHIC bollards helping preserve the integrity of the listed façade.
LUNIO amenity fixtures at the main entrance completed the scheme, supporting safe movement and a welcoming after-dark environment.
