Barking & Riverside is one of East London’s most exciting new developments. Expanding across 443 acres, this large-scale regeneration project will bring over 10,000 new homes to the area. Created with the intention of building a thriving community, the development also features a range of new amenities, including community gardens, local schools, and spaces for new businesses to establish themselves. The ProjectKingfisher Lighting was appointed to deliver the lighting solution for the residential quarter of the Barking & Riverside development. This area features an interconnected network of pedestrian walkways, cycle paths, and a central landscaped garden, all designed to support movement and create welcoming communal spaces for residents. Our role was to provide a lighting scheme that enhanced safety, improved visibility, and maintained a cohesive aesthetic throughout the public realm. By aligning with the overall vision for the development, Kingfisher Lighting helped create an environment that feels both functional and inviting for this growing riverside community. The SolutionDelivered between 2019 and late 2023, this project formed a major part of the public realm infrastructure within the wider masterplan. A substantial and technically demanding catenary system was introduced to create continuous, uniform illumination along pedestrian and cycle routes, supported by column-mounted floodlighting to enhance vertical light and strengthen spatial definition. The scheme utilised PANTHEON 2 floodlights mounted to 8 m root-mounted columns. Across the suspended system, ARTELYS 350 luminaires were specified in a mixture of module outputs and optical distributions, including symmetrical and SO5 street optics, to balance route guidance with visual comfort. A consistent specification was maintained throughout, with warm white 3000K colour temperature, DALI drivers to enable trimming and energy optimisation, and a unified RAL7021 30% gloss finish applied across columns, brackets and luminaires. The completed lighting scheme delivers excellent horizontal and vertical visibility, improving safety, confidence and wayfinding for residents and visitors alike. Key Outcomes
