What the New SAPCA Sports Lighting Code Means for the Industry

News

SAPCA has released its updated Code of Practice for Contractors Working on the Installation and Retro-fitting of Sports Lighting — a major step forward for raising industry standards across the UK. As proud SAPCA members, Kingfisher Sport is ready to help clubs, contractors, and facility operators understand what these changes mean for their projects.

What Is the Updated SAPCA Code of Practice?

The new Code provides clearer guidance on how sports lighting should be designed, installed, tested, and upgraded. It reflects the rapid evolution of sports lighting, particularly with the rise of LED technology, energy-saving controls, and stricter requirements for safety and structural integrity.

The aim is simple: to ensure facilities at every level — from grassroots clubs to national venues — receive safe, efficient, and high-quality lighting installations that stand the test of time.

What Does the New Code Cover?

The updated guidance outlines key areas that contractors and facility operators must now consider when installing or upgrading sports lighting systems:

• Electrical compliance and BS 7671 standards

• ILP and CIBSE lighting design requirements

• Mast testing, structural checks, and long-term safety

• Safe access and best working practices

• Clear rules for retro-fit projects

• Environmental responsibility and light spill control

• Smart controls and carbon-saving strategies

• Accurate documentation and handover information

This creates a consistent benchmark for quality across the whole industry.

How Kingfisher Sport Fits Into the New Standards

Because we are long-standing SAPCA members, the updated Code aligns closely with the way we already operate. We remain committed to supporting clients with the knowledge and guidance needed to navigate these requirements confidently.

Our experience includes:

• Understanding mast safety and structural considerations

• Maximising LED performance and smart control integrations

• Supporting projects with accurate lighting level verification

• Using safe work-at-height methods through trained personnel

• Partnering with accredited electrical contractors for BS 7671 compliance

• Providing clear documentation, warranties, and ongoing support

We’re not adapting to the new Code — we’ve been delivering these standards for years.

What This Means for Retro-fit Projects

The updated Code is especially valuable for clubs upgrading older systems. It offers clarity on:

• When and how mast testing should be carried out

• What electrical upgrades may be required

• How to verify LED performance correctly

• What’s needed to ensure full compliance and safety

Whether you're replacing metal-halide fittings or modernising an existing LED system, we can guide you through every step — from the initial assessment to final compliance checks.

Supporting the Industry as Standards Rise

The new SAPCA Code sets a higher, more consistent standard for sports lighting across the UK. As SAPCA members, we’re proud to support this progress and help facilities achieve lighting systems that are safe, sustainable, and built to last.

If you’re planning a new installation or looking to upgrade your existing lighting, now is the ideal time to make sure your plans align with the latest guidance.
