International Day of Light 2023

Celebrating light-based technology and the positive impact on the world around us, including some of the best lighting projects and accomplishments from over the years.

International Day of Light was established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), in 2018 to ‘strengthen cooperation and leverage its potential to foster peace and development’.

With great importance to arts and culture, education, medicine, communications, science and sustainable development, light is essential to everyday existence. A world without the advancement of light and light-based technologies life would be fundamentally different for both humans and animals alike.

The International Day of Light is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate with many events including panels and discussions, art exhibitions and even workshops throughout the globe.

We are marking this day of celebration with a look back at some of the community projects we have helped create over the years.

Gilwell Park, East London

The world famous ‘Home of the Scouts’, Gilwell Park provides many opportunities for the scouting community to come together to train and explore the peaceful woodland location. With a need to update their lighting system, our services were requested to illuminate roadways and pathways for easy and safe navigation after dusk.

We selected high-aesthetic luminaires with a low glare output to optimise visual comfort for all visitors and staff alike. The Italian flat-to-ground luminaire, ECORAYS utilises reflector-based optics to produce 0% ULOR this ensures the natural canopies remain undisturbed. DECO 2.0 bollard was also installed around the park to highlight the walkways with a soft glare-free illumination.

Elephant and Castle, Central London

South of the River Thames, Elephant and Castle is a neighbourhood full of diverse culture and is known for it’s youthful, energetic and artistic spirit. After much needed investment, the area required an elegant new lighting scheme to enhance the rejuvenation of this prestigious location.

When illuminating the community space, maximising visual comfort was a key priority therefore, ITALO was the perfect choice and was colour matched to other landmarks within the scheme. Featuring low glare, comfort optics, the fixture allowed a high-performance distribution for the recreational location ensuring residents can join together in a glare-free environment.

Lincoln Bomber Command Centre (IBCC)

RD2020

As a point of recognition and remembrance of Bomber Command and the millions of people who served during WWII. Kingfisher had the honour of lighting the memorial spire and surrounding grounds which house the wall of names, in memory of those who served.

The lighting scheme was designed to illuminate the grounds leading to the memorial centrepiece of the site with our KLOU bollards lining the walkway, Inground fittings uplighting the spire and RGB Moto flood lighting creating an impressive light show within the spire itself.
