Converting to LED - Can be harder than it looks!

Since its introduction to the industry, LED technology is slowly replacing older non-LED systems. However, choosing the right LED system is not always as easy as it may seem.

Since the birth of the LED, technology has evolved to create more efficient and adaptable lighting for all types of applications. When upgrading to an LED system there are many factors to consider in order to get the best bang for your buck!

What to Consider

Some companies state their LED fittings are equivalent to other metal halide or SON fittings, but many have no evidence to back up their claims. When you consider upgrading, it is crucial to check the specification of the luminaire, distribution and optics, lumen output and of course ROI and energy savings. This ensures you are getting the closest equivalent without being misled into purchasing an unsuitable product.

It’s not just a matter of matching up products that look similar on paper, because they could give significantly different results. For example, it is possible for a seemingly less efficient fitting to do a better job at lighting a specific area as the optics are designed to put the light in the right place.

The Benefits of the RIGHT System

Having said all of this, with the right system, there are many benefits to converting to the right LED system.

  • Long Life vs HID – the LED fittings we offer have a life of 100,000 hours vs around 5,000 hours for HID fitting
  • Maintenance Free – No need for lamp changes or other components which adds cost
  • Higher Lumens per watt – This is the main reason that LED saves money as it gives more light with lower amount of energy used
  • Dimming options available – to save further money and energy, our luminaires can be pre-programmed to dim during times of low use. This is not possible with HID
  • Instant on / off – HID lanterns have a warm up and cool down time meaning fittings cannot be switched on and off as required but LED can!
  • Control Compatible - We offer wireless options and can create bespoke programs to perfectly suit the needs of your site
  • Eco-Friendly - Many older lamps contain gases and other materials that can be harmful to the environment. LEDs do not have any toxic materials and are recyclable helping to reduce carbon footprints. We try to reduce our impact on the environment by providing a range of wildlife friendly colour temperatures with our LED products.

At Kingfisher, our experts Project and Design Teams will guide you through our range of high-quality LED luminaires and help you get the best out of your exterior lighting scheme.
